
The following motion was adopted by the Labour International Constituency Labour Party at a quorate Special General Committee meeting on 30th August, 2020
Noting the UN General Assembly Resolution (1) to commit 0. 7 percent of GNI to overseas development assistance (ODA), the subsequent legally binding commitment of the UK to this target (2) and the Paris Declaration (3) commitments to provide ODA untied to political or national interests (indicators 3 and 8), and noting that Labour has vowed to “oppose retreat from the global stage” as the Prime Minister announced that the government would be scrapping the Department for International Development (4), request the Labour Leadership to strongly condemn the amalgamation of DfID with the FCO and the stated objective of aligning UK aid to UK’s foriegn policy interests, and to ensure that the UK can continue to meet its legal commitments in future whilst retaining the ethos of aid as a means of eliminating poverty.
