This is a key role for LI and offers an opportunity to become involved in and contribute towards LP policy and campaigns work. Because of the geographical spread of LI members much of this work will need to be done online.

You can choose how to focus your role and what to make your priority depending on what needs are identified by members and the LIEC.

There are four key aims:

  • Ensure that LI can play an effective role in developing LP and LI policy as part of campaigning for a Labour government
  • Ensuring that members feel confident and well informed about LP policies and fully equipped to play an active role in LI and the wider LP.
  • Increase the influence of LI regarding LP policy initiatives.
  • Feed into LP policy forums

Your role could include:

  • Developing materials that will prepare LI delegates to the LP Women’s, youth and Annual Conferences
  • Identifying members who can contribute specialist knowledge and skills in policy areas.
  • Together with LIEC and branch executive committees, regional organisers and political education officer help organise regular online meetings for members
  • Work with LIEC to host public events on policy issues

Key Responsibilities

  1. Identify and keep members informed of the key policy areas, and assist the LIEC in promoting key policy areas that LI members should be involved in.
  2. Identify talent in others, encouraging and supporting those who want to get involved in policy development.
  3. Research suitable information materials that can distributed to LI members.
  4. Regularly report back to LIEC and work particularly with the LIEC Secretary, Communications Officer, Campaigns officer and Political Education Officer
  5. Work with LI volunteers to develop policy briefings and publicise them through the LI regular newsletter and LI website and other information sharing vehicles
  6. Help maintain the Campaign for LP victory 2018 Facebook page, including encouraging the development of campaign resources and cataloguing them so that they are easily accessible for LI member use.
  7. Maintain contact with the national LP Policy Officers as appropriate.
  8. Together with LI diversity officers help identify and develop policies that address the needs of youth, women, BAME, LGBT and disabled people.

Key Tasks

The role of LI Policy Officer is all about ensuring that members feel confident, and are well prepared and informed about LP policy areas.

  • Assembling, interpreting and analysing information
  • Regular briefing of LI members and other external organisations whre appropriate.
  • Supporting development of key consultation responses to LP policy forums;
  • Developing policy briefings for LI members.
  • Promote policy and campaign activities including using social media and assist in organising meetings, seminars, conferences or similar events

Skill Requirements

  • Knowledge of key policy areas of the LP and keeping abreast of latest trends and developments in national, regional and international strategies.
  • Engage with LI members,  working with other national and local organisations where necessary.
  • Support the development of policy influencing strategies and actions
  • Draft and  input into documents, including  position papers, concept notes, agendas, speeches, proposals, presentations.
  • Have regular access to the internet and social media and able to use or willing to learn to use online videoconferencing.

Lines of Communication

You will be a voting member of the Labour International Executive Committee (LIEC) and would be required to attend LIEC, General Committee and All Members meetings.

Time Commitment

Approximately 5 hours a month but this will increase considerably during General Election or other campaigns. You will need to be available to attend LI meetings at weekends, including LIEC, general committee and all members meetings.
