Low Cloud over Castelo Branco, Portugal
Low Cloud over Castelo Branco, Portugal

A new postman I have never seen before did the deliveries in the village today, and he was wearing not a face mask or goggles but a helmet and full face visor! I hope the regular postman is not ill.

There are still no recorded cases of coronavirus here.

This week I have started going for a walk every day. I had also started a weekly walk to the next village to the cashpoint, but now the rain has begun and will be here for several days. At 300+ metres above sea level the weather here can often be quite dramatic, and now there is heavy low cloud over everything. Even the dogs are quiet.
At night the cloud drops and in the morning the village is in the middle of cloud. There is nothing at all to see until it lifts.

On days like this I find it hard to focus my thoughts or motivate myself, and I’ve just learn that the buses have stopped running! Now I really feel trapped. Spring is a strange season here; winter weather returns when you least expect it. Then the walls can seem to close in, even in normal times.

I’m fidgety and distracted, and finding it difficult even to read a book. There are now 39 language lessons stacked up on whatsapp and I refuse to open the phone!

There is rumour of a case in the neighbouring district, but there are still no face masks to be seen. A cart has been through the village spraying the streets; otherwise it continues to be very quiet.
