In amongst the farrago of disgraceful lies from Johnson, Patel and other Tories seeking to use the London Bridge attacks and deaths for narrow political advantages some facts are necessary.

1. Automatic release after half of the sentence has been served was introduced by he Tories in 1991.
2. The underlying idea of part of the sentence being served in custody and part on license has been in place since 1967. See the graphic below from the Counter terrorism and Border Security Act 2019 sentencing fact sheet.
3. The Tories have been in power for 31 out of the 52 years since 1967.
