Holiday Makers and World Changers

We’re helping UK citizens who are currently travelling abroad to vote in the next UK general election.

You might be on the other side of the world, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be involved in changing the British political landscape! You can vote either by post or by proxy, using a friend or family member back in the UK.

With Brexit looking more disastrous than ever, it’s crucially important that we’re all ready to do our bit to bring in a transformative Labour government; for the many, not the few.

How to Vote From Abroad

Registering to Vote

The first step is making sure you’re registered to vote. Many of you will be already, but it never hurts to be sure. To register to vote you’ll need your:

  • National Insurance Number
  • Passport

and that’s it! The process is quick and easy, and soon enough you’ll be on your way to creating a better Britain to go back to. Now let’s get into the methods of voting while in Australia:

Proxy Voting

This is the best way for a UK citizen to vote in future elections. It’s quick and simple and is generally a really easy way to be able to vote while abroad (I do it like this so that’s a personal recommendation). Anyone who’s registered to vote can be a proxy voter on your behalf, and can be the proxy for up to two people (more if that person is a close relative (I get my mum to vote for me!)) Here is the form you’ll want if you’re registering to proxy vote and living abroad. Once you’ve finished it send it to your Electoral Registration Office back in the UK and away you go!

Postal Voting

You can vote by post, but if you’re in Australia, New Zealand or basically anywhere outside of Europe, we don’t recommend it. This is due to the fact that there are too many potential delays and issues with free posting that means it is a risky way to cast your vote.

If you’d still like to vote by post and you’re from England, Scotland and Wales, you’ll need to fill out the form provided here. Unfortunately, if you’re a citizen of Northern Ireland you’ll have to provide a reason for your postal vote (such as on grounds of disability, education or employment).

Thanks for reading!

We hope this is helpful. Under a Labour government we can fix our NHS; bring back public ownership of the railways; provide for so many of those who are currently being left out and mistreated by Theresa May’s Conservative Party. With your help and the help of thousands of committed Labour members across the world, we can create a fairer, better Britain, and perhaps one that we’ll all be a bit more excited to go home to.
