Open Selection is the campaign to allow Labour members to select and reselect their parliamentary candidates democratically. It’s also been called mandatory reselection.
One Member One Vote has revitalised the Labour party with a bold new leadership and manifesto – For the Many, Not the Few. This motion going to this year’s Labour Conference takes the next step, replacing the intransparent ‘trigger ballot’ with a simple democratic vote among local Labour members on who should stand as their parliamentary candidate.
If the motion is passed, local Labour members of each constituency will always have a democratic vote to determine their parliamentary candidate in the coming election. Sitting MPs will automatically be included on the selection shortlist, unless they choose not to stand again. Everyone who has been a member of the Constituency Labour Party for 6 months by the time of the ballot is entitled to vote.
